Hickories
Carya
kweichowensis Kuang & Lu. "Guizhou shan he tao".
Guizhou hickory.
(This
description is taken from Grauke, L.J.; Wood, B.W.; Payne, J.A.
Genetic resources of Carya in Vietnam and China. Annu. Rpt. N.
Nut Growers Assn. 82:80-87. 1991. )
Guizhou hickory was first described by Kuang and Lu (in Chang
and Lu, 1979) based on material collected at An-Lung (Anlong),
Guizhou (Chang Tzi-sung & Chang Yong-tien 5460, in Herb. Inst.
Bot. Acad. Sin.). Other reported locations for the species include
Wangmo, Xingyi, and Ceheng, all of which are in southwestern Guizhou
(Kuang and Lu, in Chang and Lu, 1979).
C. kweichowensis is reported to have naked buds, but differs from
the three other Asian Carya species with naked buds (C. cathayensis,
C. hunanensis, and C. tonkinensis) by having glabrous bracts,
bracteoles and anthers in the male flowers (Kuang and Li, 1979).
In addition, the winter buds are reported to be nearly black,
rather than rusty colored as in the other species (Kuang &
Li, 1979).
