'Melrose' (Nut photo a) (Nut photo b) Orig. as chance seedling in the orchard of John Crow, Hanna, LA. Selections from that orchard were numbered as CS (Crow Seedling)1 to 226. Propagated by Guidry Nursery, St. Martinsville, LA as CS 23. Collected by Louisana Agr. Exp. Sta. in 1964 as L15. Tested by W. A. Young and W. A.Meadows in plantings at Melrose, LA and released under that name in 1979. Nut: oblong with acute apex and base; round in cross section; 53 nuts/lb, 57% kernel; kernels golden to light brown, with wide dorsal grooves. Protogynous with mid-season pollen shed and mid-season receptivity. Ripens late mid-season, shortly after 'Stuart'. Resistant to scab. Recommended (1990) for planting or trial in AL, AR, LA, and MS.
