'Witte' (Nut photo) Orig. as native seedling in Burlington, IA, selected by John H. Witte. Introd. about 1925. Discovered by pioneer woodsman who brought it to the attention of Witte. Nut: oval elliptic with obtuse apex and rounded, often assymetric base; 82 nuts/lb, 52% kernel; kernels with wide dorsal grooves, deep secondary dorsal grooves, and wide, shallow basal cleft. Protandrous. Starts bearing very late. Matures nuts in early September in Brownwood, Texas
